Gouache on Paper, each painting 15.25cm x 45.8cm, 2012

This week I decided to tackle two of my greatest art-related weaknesses - the inability to visualize in 2D, and indecision in painting. The former made me shy away from drawings and paintings, preferring sculptures instead, and the latter made me always choose the more forgiving mediums of acrylic and oil over water-based paints.

The fast-drying nature of gouache made me work fast, and forced me to paint with intuition rather than precision. After the first nerve-wrecking brushstroke, each subsequent quick-spreading, unpredictably wet stroke became more and more under control, and I began to take joy in blending the naturally vibrant gouache paints.

Animals are also a great subject matter for quick studies - combining the merits of humans and plants without the demerits of both. They are more forgiving than human subjects because precision is not as crucial in creating a convincing impression, yet they are livelier subjects than plants. There’s just something about eyes - they always seem to add soul to a painting.

Thank goodness for people that pick you up when you fall down. A most salient discovery I’ve made is that I completely lack the ability to think and care for myself. There comes a time when you realize that pure, unadulterated selfishness may perhaps be the only liberation you can get in a long time, and probably the most nourishing thing you can do for yourself. What exactly is happiness? Is it ideal and immaculate or is it just salvaged scraps? I guess once you get pass the sad fact that ideals don’t thrive well in reality you begin to accept the imperfect world for its chipped and crackled beauty. And sometimes, maybe, just maybe, these scraps could piece together to form a new whole.
